The Jozef Stefan Institute was founded in 1949. It is the biggest public research institute for basic and applied research in natural sciences and technology in Slovenia. About 800 people are employed by the Institute; about 400 employed are Ph.D. scientists. The main research areas are physics, chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, information technologies, reactor physics and technology, energy and the environment. In view of its activities and status, J. Stefan Institute plays the role of a national institute, complementing the role of the universities and bridging the gap between science and industry.
